Title: “The Standards” and the Teaching of Chinese Phonetics in International Chinese Language Education
Abstract: This paper examines the differences between the requirements of the Standards and the practice of phonetics teaching in International Chinese Language Education. Starting from the quantitative indicators for Chinese phonetics and the descriptions of listening and speaking abilities related to pronunciation outlined in the Standards, the study discusses how these requirements differ from those in current teaching practice. By analyzing the causes of pronunciation difficulties among Chinese learners whose native language is German, the paper identifies the key components that phonetics instruction should include, highlights issues that require particular attention in teaching, and proposes corresponding pedagogical strategies. Finally, it emphasizes the importance of accurate, standard and natural Chinese pronunciation in the age of artificial intelligence.
Keywords: “The Standards”; Chinese phonetics teaching; natural intonation; pronunciation errors; teaching strategies; the AI era
