Title: On the Quantity Matching of “Chinese Characters List” and “Words List” in Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education

Abstract: Statistics on the quantity of words and the quantity of Chinese characters used for forming these words in six different high-frequency words lists shows that there is a stable correlation between the quantity of high-frequency words and the quantity of Chinese characters for forming these words. The setting of the quantity of “Words List” and the quantity of “Chinese Characters List” in Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education shows a substantially different quantity correlation which causes a lot of comparatively low-frequency words entering its “Words Lists”. This is caused by the setting of mismatching quantity of “Chinese Characters List” and “Words List”, and the so called innovative “Chinese Character precedes Words” approach also paved the way for it.
