Title: Research on the Integration of Chinese Character Riddles into Chinese Character Teaching in International Chinese Education
Abstract: Chinese character riddles are a form of wordplay that conveys meaning through the combination and decomposition of Chinese character forms. Within the field of Teaching Chinese as an International Language, character instruction occupies a pivotal position, serving as both a primary focus and a significant challenge. This study compiles and analyzes relevant literature regarding Chinese character riddles, outlines their conceptual definitions, and provides a classification system. It summarizes the significance of integrating riddles into TCIL character instruction: specifically, their capacity to enhance learners’ comprehension of Chinese character structure and traditional Chinese culture, provide innovative pedagogical approaches for character teaching, stimulate learners’ interest, and revitalize cultural heritage. Furthermore, the study proposes specific measures for integrating riddles into the TCIL classroom, including adhering to principles for riddle selection, organizing riddle competitions, utilizing gamified riddle-learning software, and integrating them with traditional Chinese festivals.
