Title: Chinese Language Learning Challenges Among Ethnic Chinese Students in a Malaysian National Elementary School
Abstract: Many young Malaysian ethnic Chinese students in vernacular primary schools do not speak Chinese at home as they come from English-speaking backgrounds. The qualitative study investigated the challenges of teachers in teaching reading and writing to students from English-speaking backgrounds, informed by Van Patten’s Input Processing Theory. It sought to determine ways in which teachers could help these students develop effective learning habits and devise effective teaching strategies to enable the students to learn Chinese successfully. Data were obtained from field research involving classroom observations and interviews with six teachers and 41 students in a primary school. The research examined three learning stages, namely, Stage (1) Unpacking, Stage (2) Regrouping, and Stage (3) Summarizing and Presenting. In terms of the three stages, the study found that when teachers consciously guided students through three stages, students were able to internalize the content taught and succeed in learning Chinese.
