Title: Integration of Literature and Editorial: Exploration and Practice in Cultural Content Design of Advanced Chinese Textbooks ——A Case Study of Advanced Chinese Textbooks from the 2024 Princeton University Beijing Chinese Language Program

Abstract: At a critical juncture where the "Chinese language craze" continues to deepen and global Chinese education is moving towards specialization, the Princeton University Beijing Chinese Language Program (Pu Bei Ban), as a flagship international Chinese education project jointly established by China and the United States, has become a model for Chinese language education both domestically and internationally over the past 32 years through immersive teaching and high-quality textbooks, and has been emulated by over 20 prestigious international universities. Based on the framework of cultural discourse analysis, this study, through close textual reading and classroom observation, reveals the innovative practices of the 2024 textbooks in three aspects: cultural symbol selection, value narrative strategies, and the cultivation of critical thinking. Taking the 2024 Pu Bei Ban advanced textbook China's Development and Dilemmas and selected texts from the literary supplementary textbook as examples, the newly compiled supplementary textbook places greater emphasis on the combination of classic and contemporary elements in the selection of literary works. In addition to retaining some classic works in the history of Chinese literature, such as Lu Xun's Kong Yiji and Lao She's Black and White Li, it also introduces many outstanding contemporary literary works and editorials, forming a diverse dialogue field of cultural discourse; reconstructing a Chinese cultural narrative interwoven with tradition and modernity; the introduction of editorial texts breaks the single aesthetic orientation of literary textbooks, forming a progressive teaching design of "literary aesthetics—editorial critical thinking," providing advanced learners with a multi-dimensional perspective to observe Chinese culture and social issues. The "classic literature + editorial critical thinking" dual-track model demonstrates significant innovation in the construction of cultural discourse, but there is room for improvement in the contemporary interpretation of literary texts and the timeliness of editorial topics. This study believes that this cross-genre integration model has significant reference value for international Chinese education, and its "cultural dialogue" concept can be referenced in the development of advanced Chinese as a foreign language textbooks. By establishing a dynamic text updating mechanism, the cultural interpretive power and teaching effectiveness of textbooks can be further enhanced. This study provides a reference path for the compilation of advanced Chinese cultural textbooks and helps promote the diversified development of the global Chinese education discourse system.
