Title: Sirakawa Shizuka’s thought of Han Characters and its inspiration for Japanese Han Character education after the World War II
Abstract: Shirakawa Shizuka is a renowned scholar of Chinese graphology both in China and Japan. His research on characters emphasizes their systematic nature. Based on ancient divination culture and oracle bone script, he conducts a comprehensive examination of ancient Chinese culture. However, after World War II, under strong American influence, the Japanese government rapidly reduced Chinese character education with the ultimate aim of abolishing them. More importantly, many characters were modified without careful consideration, damaging the structural rationale of the characters themselves. Shirakawa sharply criticized this. In contemporary times, the Japanese educational community has rekindled interest in Shirakawa’s studies of characters. Fukui Prefectural Board of Education has focused on popularizing knowledge of Shirakawa’s character studies, one significant direction being to help people recognize again the logic and systematicity of Chinese characters. Moreover, this character education is directed at the wider community rather than being limited to school education. Reviewing Shirakawa’s thought on characters and their post-war fate in Japan holds considerable reference value for China.
