Abstract: The genesis of modern Chinese language education can be traced back to two primary sources: traditional enlightenment education and the trend of Sinicization of Western learning. The investigation into Chinese language education necessitates the utilisation of historical materials as a foundational element for reasoning and argumentation. Relevant historical research works are an indispensable foundation for language construction. However, contemporary practitioners possess limited knowledge regarding the seminal works of modern Chinese language education history. Consequently, there is a pressing need to re-examine these historical texts. History of Modern Chinese Language Education, a collaborative work by Li Xingbao and Gu Huangchu, two esteemed scholars in the field of language education history, reveals a comprehensive account of the subject. The book offers a broad perspective on the evolution of Chinese language education, emphasising specific topics over time while incorporating extensive quotations from historical materials. It combines narrative with insightful commentary, making it a valuable resource for scholars and practitioners in the field. The book can be read to gain diverse historical experiences, to help different groups of readers re-conceptualise Chinese language education, to learn from the achievements of the past, and to identify real research problems.
